Noah Centineo may be gearing up for another major franchise. The actor, who is currently filming Street Fighter for Legendary, is in negotiations to join Sydney Sweeney in the studio’s ambitious live-action take on Gundam.

The project is being helmed by Jim Mickle, the filmmaker behind Netflix’s acclaimed Sweet Tooth, which adapted Jeff Lemire’s popular Vertigo comic. Mickle has also penned the screenplay for what is being described as a large-scale, effects-heavy sci-fi epic, still operating under a working title.

While Legendary remained tight-lipped about ongoing negotiations, sources indicate the studio is seeking to pair Sweeney with a strong male lead. Previous discussions with Outer Banks actor Drew Starkey ultimately did not move forward. Sweeney, who anchors the film, is said to be actively participating in the casting process, particularly for the character who will share the story’s emotional core with her. Much like a star-crossed pairing, the central duo hail from rival factions engaged in an interplanetary conflict.

Gundam, which first aired as an anime in 1979, unfolds during the Universal Century, a time when population pressures push humanity into space colonies. Tensions between Earth and the colonies escalate into a war for independence, fought with towering robotic suits known as mechas. The upcoming adaptation seeks to reinterpret these foundational conflicts for a new generation.

For Centineo, the film could mark another major step in his evolving career trajectory. After winning a global fan base with Netflix’s To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, he went on to appear as Atom Smasher in Black Adam and joined A24’s war drama Warfare earlier this year. He is also expected to begin work on a Rambo prequel soon, signalling a busy period ahead. His current Legendary project, Street Fighter, will be distributed by Paramount and is slated for an October 16, 2026 release.

If talks close, Gundam will become Centineo’s second collaboration with Legendary and potentially one of the studio’s most high-profile sci-fi ventures.
