The other day, Letterboxd announced a video store, a rental service that the platform will integrate into its application. It has been a platform for users to share information about the films they watch, including reviews, all this while. However, it will have a video-on-demand service starting December. It will allow users to rent films directly from Letterboxd's application. Making the announcement, the platform said, "This isn’t a subscription service! No lock-in, no paywall. Just rent the films you want, whenever you want, and join the conversation with our community logging, reviewing and adding them to lists."
The so-called Letterboxd Video Store will have offerings such as standout films in festival circuits, old film restorations, newly available films that have been in the watchlists of users for a long time, and more. Rental cost and availability will vary according to user location, and some titles will be accessible on the platform for just a limited period of time. Further, those who use the platform can make a list of films they would like to be part of the store and recommend adding them to it.
Android, iOS, Android TV, Apple TV, Airplay, and Chromecast will be able to access the store. It is going to be interesting to see how the addition of a new service to the platform will impact popular streaming platforms, such as Prime Video and Netflix, among others.
