Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock have officially reunited on set as filming for Practical Magic 2 gets underway, nearly three decades after the original film enchanted audiences. The duo, both now based in London and living near each other, are thrilled to be stepping back into the shoes of witch sisters Gillian and Sally Owens.
Reflecting on their close bond, Kidman shared with People, “Sandra and I are basically like sisters. We tease each other constantly—it’s honestly just so natural.” Their deep friendship makes the experience all the more special as they return to the world of Practical Magic after so many years. “It’s wild to think we’re doing this again after 27 years. We looked at each other and just laughed, saying, ‘Are we really back here?’ But once the cameras rolled, it all just fell into place,” Kidman said with affection, adding, “Sandra is so lovable and hilarious—I absolutely adore her. We’re truly having the best time together.”
The highly anticipated sequel is being directed by Susanne Bier, whom Kidman described as a “wonderful female director.” She praised the backing from Warner Bros., noting, “They’ve given incredible support to bring this story back and expand it in new ways.” Kidman also expressed her excitement to work again with Joey King, calling her “lovely” and highlighting the “amazing group of women and some fantastic men” shaping the next chapter of the Owens family saga.
Familiar faces Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest will return as the Owens aunts, Franny and Jet. The new cast lineup welcomes Joey King, Lee Pace, Maisie Williams, Xolo Mariduena, and Solly McLeod, promising a dynamic mix of returning and fresh characters.
While the plot details for Practical Magic 2 are still under wraps, the legacy of the original film looms large. The first movie, directed by Griffin Dunne, told the story of sisters Sally and Gillian, born into a family of witches and grappling with a curse endangering the men they love.
Producers behind the sequel have expressed their excitement about this new chapter: “Twenty-five years ago, Sally, Gillian, Aunt Jet, and Aunt Franny came to life on screen from Alice Hoffman’s beloved novel. We’re so excited to bring the Owens family back, introducing Joey, Lee, Maisie, Solly, and Xolo into our magical world.” The enduring love for these characters motivates the creative team to delight long-time fans and newcomers alike as they continue the Owens’ story.
The film’s script is being co-written by Akiva Goldsman, who contributed to the original screenplay, and Georgia Pritchett. Both Bullock and Kidman are returning not just as stars but also as producers, partnering again with original producer Denise Di Novi.
