Authorities in Turkey banned a screening of director Luca Guadagnino's Queer at the recent Mubi Fest Istanbul after they considered the film excessively provocative. Guadagnino hit out at the authorities at the 2024 Marrakech Film Festival on November 30, Saturday. Speaking at its jury presser, the filmmaker stated that he would be glad if audiences in Turkey downloaded the film, starring Daniel Craig in the role of a homosexual American expatriate in Mexico City, and watched it.
"They banned the movie because they said the movie was creating social disorder. I wonder if they’ve seen the movie or if they are just judging it by the outline or let’s say the facetious stupidity of some journalism focusing on James Bond going gay,” stated Guadagnino.
Guadagnino stated that he was "shocked by" the ban and that he would "fight the institution" that aims to tarnish the "inevitable powers" of cinema. Guadagnino's comments invited thunderous applause from the audience at the festival.
Also starring Drew Starkey and Jason Schwartzman, among others, Queer had its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival. Set in Mexico City of the 1950s, the film tells a love story between gay couple, William Lee (Crarig) and Eugene Allerton (Starkey).
