In the recent BAFTA ceremony, veteran director Guillermo del Toro was awarded Best Animated Film for Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio. While delivering the acceptance speech, the auteur said that animation is a medium of art, not a genre for kids.

In the acceptance speech, del Toro said, "Animation is not a genre for kids. It's a medium for art, it's a medium for film, and I think animation should stay in the conversation." He went on to thank Netflix for thinking Pinocchio as a musical about life and death.

The film was also nominated for Best Production Score and Best Score, which it lost to All Quiet on the Western Front and Babylon, respectively. Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio is also nominated for Best Animated Feature Film at the 95th Academy Awards next month.

Emmy Award-winning animator Mark Gustafson also co-directed the film along with Del Toro.
