ABC has decided to continue its hit TV series Grey's Anatomy, and the medical drama series will return for a 19th season. This comes as the lead star of the show, Ellen Pompeo, signed a one-year deal to continue playing the show’s title character, Meredith Grey.

Over the last two years, Pompeo has been vocal about bringing an end to the show. Pompeo's contract, along with that of the remaining two series regulars Chandra Wilson and James Pickens Jr ended with season 17. Though the others signed a multi-year deal that includes season 19, Pompeo had only signed on to star in the 18th season. Now, the actor will officially return for the 19th season.

Created and executive produced by Shonda Rhimes, Grey's Anatomy explores the lives of surgical interns, residents and attendings as they develop into practicing doctors while balancing personal and professional relationships.

Grey’s Anatomy also stars Kevin McKidd, Kim Raver, Camilla Luddington, Caterina Scorsone, Kelly McCreary, Chris Carmack, Jake Borelli, Richard Flood, and Anthony Hill.

For season 19, Pompeo has been promoted as an executive producer from the co-executive producer. Krista Vernoff serves as showrunner and executive producer. Betsy Beers and Mark Gordon also executive produce. Debbie Allen is the producing director and executive producer.
