CW’s superhero drama series The Flash is to end after season 9. The series is based on the popular speedster from the DC comics known as Flash. The Flash stars Grant Gustin in the role of Barry Allen and his superhero alter-ego Flash. The series, which aired its first episode in October 2014, is a spinoff of CW's Arrow, based on another DC comics character known as Green Arrow. Grant Gustin was introduced as Barry Allen in the eighth episode of Arrow’s second season titled The Scientist. Shortly after his appearance in the show, the showrunners confirmed a spinoff along with the cast members.

The series, which typically releases twenty-three episodes per season, will reportedly end its ninth and final season with just thirteen episodes. The Flash is part of a universe of DC characters with their own TV shows, known as Arrowverse. As is tradition with comic book characters, all the Arrowverse characters frequently appear in each other's shows.  The Arrowverse includes shows like The Flash, Constantine, Superman & Lois, Legends of Tomorrow, Vixen, Batwoman, Supergirl, and Black Lightning.

The Flash’s season 8 became the highest watched series in the Arrowverse, drawing around 1.03 million viewers from around the world. Grant Gustin is joined by cast members Candice Patton, Danielle Panabaker, Rick Cosnett, Carlos Valdes, Tom Cavanagh, Jesse L. Martin, and Keiynan Lonsdale. The makers are yet to announce a premiere date for season 9.
