Actor Lashana Lynch is all set to star alongside Viola Davis and Thuso Mbedu in the upcoming historical epic The Woman King.

The film will be helmed by The Old Guard director Gina Prince-Bythewood, who also co-wrote the current draft with Dana Stevens, from the latter's original screenplay.

The film, which is inspired by real events that took place in the Kingdom of Dahomey - one of the most powerful states of Africa in the 18th and 19th centuries -  will follow Nanisca, General of the all-female military unit, and Nawi, an ambitious recruit, who together fought enemies who violated their honor, enslaved their people and threatened to destroy everything they lived for.

Cathy Schulman is producing the film through her Welle Entertainment along with Davis and Tennon of JuVee Productions and Maria Bello of Jack Blue Productions. Nicole Brown and Shary Shirazi are overseeing the project for TriStar Pictures.

Lynch is best known for starring alongside Brie Larson in 2019's Captain Marvel. She will soon be seen opposite Daniel Craig in No Time to Die and in Debbie Tucker Green’s Ear for Eye. The actor is currently shooting for TriStar Pictures and Netflix’s Matilda.
