The trailer of the much-anticipated Prithviraj-starrer, Ranam, is here, and based on the footage, the film, which is scheduled for release on September 6, appears to be on par with the best in Hollywood.

The trailer has been put together by Sreejith Sarang, editor of Naragasooran, who seems to have a keen eye for the placement of scenes, especially the fight scenes taken from different portions of the film and stitched together for maximum impact.

Jakes Bejoy's background score amplifies the effect of the trailer, which contains visual references ranging from Michael Mann's Heat/Collateral to Nicolas Winding Refn's Drive/Only God Forgives. It begins with Prithviraj's voiceover hinting at the fact that he is a protege of Nandhu's character, Bhaskaran. You get the feeling that their relationship is much like Bryan Cranston and Ryan Gosling's from Drive. And like Gosling, Prithviraj's character happens to be a mechanic. Oh, and watch out for that hammer.

But it's obvious that that's where the comparisons end. A tale of warring Indian gangs in Detroit, USA, the trailer shows glimpses of tough and stoic gangsters belonging to multiple ethnicities, all engaged in various kinds of shady deals. And Rahman's Damodar Ratnam, a Sri Lankan, is one of them. There is also a sense that some of the principal characters have had enough of the city. Bhutanese cinematographer Jigme Tenzig's camera beautifully captures the seedier side of the city, moving in and around seedy nightclubs and warehouses with a natural fluidity.
