It is no doubt that Kattappa's character served as a major turning point in the Baahubali films (2015 and 2017), created by SS Rajamouli. Played by Sathyaraj, the character was a loyal guard, general of armed forces, a mentor and combat teacher to the royals of Mahishmati. Eight years after the films' release, the character is reportedly getting a spinoff film.
According to reports, the film is titled Kattappa Rising with legendary writer Vijayendra Prasad penning the script along with SS Rajamouli. It is still unclear if Rajamouli himself will be helming the spinoff and if Sathyaraj will reprise his role. Currently, the film is in the pre-visualisation stage. An official announcement regarding the same is yet to be announced.
Torn between his love for Amarendra Baahubali and his loyalty for the kingdom, kills Amarendra Baahubali under the orders of Sivagami (Ramya Krishnan). He is filled with guilt for years until he meets Amarendra's son Mahendra who had survived and was living away from the kingdom, unaware of his father's legacy. He narrates his story after which Mahendra decides to declare war on Bhallaladeva (Rana Daggubati).
Meanwhile, the Baahubali franchise is preparing for a major cinematic return later this year on the first film's 10th anniversary. Titled Baahubali: The Epic, the re-release will combine both parts of SS Rajamouli’s saga, Baahubali: The Beginning (2015) and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (2017), into one extended feature running 5 hours and 27 minutes. Set for release in October 31, the new cut may include deleted sequences that never made it to theatres. Rajamouli is said to have shot more than 11 hours of material across the two films, much of which was left out during editing.
The franchise stars Prabhas, Rana Daggubati, Anushka Shetty and Tamannaah Bhatia in lead roles, supported by Ramya Krishnan, Sathyaraj and Nassar. The films marked a major landmark in India's cinematic history with the sequel alone grossing over Rs 1,800 crore globally. The first part earned over Rs 650 crore. It earned accolades for its story and the actors' performances in the film.
While the original two-part series has long been celebrated for its scale and technical achievement, Baahubali: The Epic is positioned as a one-of-a-kind theatrical experience.
