As Yevade Subramanyam prepares for its re-release on 21 March, director Nag Ashwin spoke with the media about the film’s significance, his plans for Kalki 2, and the recent fan wars involving actors Nani and Vijay Deverakonda.
Reflecting on Yevade Subramanyam, which originally released in 2015, Ashwin noted its relevance today. “Today, we have become more materialistic, chasing targets and numbers like Subbu in this film,” he said. “Re-releases are common these days, but this film had a big impact when it first came out. Back then, we released it at an unusual time, yet the response was strong. Now, we want a newer generation of youngsters to experience it. I think the world has become crazier now than when we first made this film.”
On Kalki 2, Ashwin remained reserved but addressed the question of Prabhas’ screen time and the sequel’s timeline. “By the end of the year, we are planning to start the film,” he said (laughing). “And of course, Prabhas will have more screen time in the sequel. In the first part, we set up everything about Sumati, the Mahabharata, and the world. In the sequel, we will explore Bhairava and Karna’s angle throughout.”
When asked about the recent fan debates between supporters of Vijay Deverakonda and Nani, Ashwin said he had only become aware of them recently. “When we were making the film, Nani was very supportive of Vijay. Both were ambitious but also very easygoing people,” he said.
Yevade Subramanyam was produced by Swapna Dutt and Priyanka Dutt under Swapna Cinema. While it was a sleeper hit at the box office, the film later gained significant acclaim for its themes and character depth. Starring Nani, Vijay Deverakonda, and Malavika Nair, the film marked Deverakonda’s debut as a lead actor.
