Nikhil Siddhartha voiced his concern over the rising cost of food and beverages in cinema halls, highlighting the growing gap between audience affordability and the in-theatre experience. Taking to X (formerly Twitter) over the weekend, the actor urged distributors to address what he called an ‘insane’ pricing issue that is affecting regular moviegoers.

“High ticket rates should be capped.. but the bigger issue is selling popcorn and cool drinks at insane prices,” Nikhil posted adding, “I watched a recent film in a theatre and was shocked I spent more money on snacks than the actual movie. I request the distribution circles to please address this concern so we can have more audiences enjoying movies on the big screen. At least allow us to take our water bottles into the theatres.”

The post rapidly gained traction, garnering support from fans and the broader public who shared similar frustrations. Many users have noted that a family excursion to the cinema has become financially burdensome, as the cost of snacks frequently exceeds the cost of the ticket. Additionally, certain responses inquired as to why water bottles are prohibited from entering theatres, despite the exorbitant prices of concession stands.

Nikhil’s comments follow a similar sentiment expressed by producer Naga Vamsi during promotions for his upcoming film Kingdom. He also said that food and drink costs were too high and asked the government to step in, especially with national multiplex chains.

As the film industry tries to get back to normal after the pandemic, F&B pricing models at theaters are being looked at more closely. While various stakeholders in the film business have previously acknowledged the concern, Nikhil’s public statement may add fresh momentum to the debate on making cinemas more accessible.

On the work front, Nikhil is gearing up for the release of his ambitious period action film Swayambhu, directed by Bharat Krishnamachari. The film, billed to be a pan-Indian historical epic, features Nikhil as a legendary warrior and co-stars Samyuktha and Nabha Natesh. Backed by Pixel Studios and presented by Tagore Madhu, Swayambhu is slated for release in October 2025, with a teaser expected to drop soon.
