Vijay Deverakonda’s Kingdom Hindi version likely to skip theatrical release

Saamraajya, the Hindi version of the spy action drama, may premiere directly on Netflix

Vijay Deverakonda’s upcoming action drama Kingdom is confirmed to release in Telugu and Tamil on July 31. Written and directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri and co-starring Bhagyashri Borse, the film is set in a politically tense Sri Lanka and follows the journey of a spy who rises to become a leader. However, recent reports have cast uncertainty over the Hindi theatrical release of the film.

Although a Hindi teaser titled Saamraajya, with Ranbir Kapoor’s voiceover, was released months ago, the makers have not announced a theatrical release date for the Hindi version. Industry reports suggest that the team is considering a direct OTT release on Netflix for the Hindi version, bypassing cinemas altogether.

According to reports, Netflix had initially signed a different streaming agreement for Kingdom. However, multiple delays in the theatrical release reportedly prompted the platform to push for an expedited digital rollout. Compounding this is the challenge of securing multiplex partnerships for the Hindi version and the standard eight-week gap mandated between theatrical and OTT releases. These factors are said to have influenced the makers' decision to skip theatres and opt for a direct digital release on Netflix instead. An official confirmation from the production team is awaited.

Produced by Sithara Entertainments and Fortune Four Cinemas, Kingdom features music by Anirudh Ravichander. The Vijay Deverakonda starrer also features Satyadev in a prominent role. Cinematography is handled by Jomon T John and Girish Gangadharan, with editing by Navin Nooli and production design by Avinash Kolla.
