Champion, the period drama starring Roshan Meka and Anaswara Rajan that released on Friday, performed decently at the box office on its opening day.
According to a report from Sacnilk.com, the film grossed Rs 2.75 crore nett on day 1 at domestic box office. While these figures are not bad by themselves, what might impact the film’s box office status is its budget. Co-produced by Swapna Cinemas, Champion, which is a period drama set in 1948, was reportedly made on a budget of Rs 45 crore. So the film must definitely pick up over the weekend, and by great margins, to have any chance at the box office.
The film’s figures in the overseas market are yet to be ascertained. Directed by Pradeep Advaitham, Champion also featured Nandamuri Kalyan Chakravarthy, Kay Kay Menon, VK Naresh, Murali Sharma, and Vennela Kishore in the ensemble cast. Swapna Cinemas has bankrolled this project in association with Zee Studios, Anandi Art Creations, and Concept Films.
In our review for the film, we noted, “While the story by Pradeep Advaitham, who makes his directorial debut here, looks good on paper, the execution leaves you wanting for more — especially when the film tries to mix historical events with fiction.”
