Silverstone had already given Ajith Kumar one of his most talked-about weekends in recent times, even beyond the race itself. The actor-racer found himself at the centre of an unexpected Tamil cinema moment when Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and actor Vijay met him at the circuit, with their warm embrace quickly becoming one of the most widely shared images from the event.
However, a brief interaction with a fan at Silverstone has now shifted the conversation. A video circulating on social media shows Ajith appearing visibly irritated when a fan approaches him with a phone while attempting to take a selfie. The actor gives the fan a stern look, following which a member of his security team intervenes and asks the person to move away.
The clip has divided social media, with several users criticising Ajith's reaction and questioning whether a more cordial response was possible. Some others, however, have urged viewers not to judge the actor based on a short clip without knowing what happened immediately before or after the interaction. The video also prompted comparisons with Lewis Hamilton, with one section of social media arguing that even the Formula 1 champion would not have reacted similarly.
The incident has also brought renewed attention to the complicated relationship between Ajith and fan culture. The actor has frequently maintained that he prefers to be approached with consideration and has, on previous occasions, asked fans to maintain decorum. Earlier this year, a video from an Asian Le Mans Series event in Abu Dhabi similarly showed him asking fans to behave themselves, telling them, “Please behave yourself. This is not a theatre.”
That earlier incident, however, involved Ajith addressing what reports described as unruly behaviour at a racing event, while the latest clip centres on a fan attempting to take a selfie. The circumstances surrounding the new interaction remain unclear, making it difficult to establish from the short video alone what prompted the actor's reaction.
The timing has also added an unusual contrast to the Silverstone narrative. Only days earlier, Ajith and Vijay had produced a very different viral moment when the two stars met at the circuit, with Vijay running towards Ajith and embracing him. Their interaction was widely viewed as a symbolic break from the decades-old rivalry between their fan bases.
Ajith's racing team subsequently finished 38th overall in the Michelin Le Mans Cup round at Silverstone. While the race itself had placed the actor's motorsport ambitions in the spotlight, the viral selfie video has once again shown how quickly an off-track interaction can become part of the larger conversation surrounding a star.
