Vatsala Rajagopal, known for her roles in films such as Roja, Anniyan, Sathi Leelavathi and Mozhi, passed away in Chennai on Friday (October 30). She was 93. According to reports, the actor died due to age-related ailments, and her mortal remains have been kept at her residence in Pallavaram for public homage.

Born and raised in Thiruvananthapuram, Vatsala developed an interest in dance and theatre during her school years. In an interview with Dinamalar in January 2024, she recalled moving to Chennai in 1953 after her marriage and joining the office of the Accountant General as a clerk. K Balachander, who later became one of Tamil cinema's most influential filmmakers, was then a senior officer at the same office. She subsequently got an opportunity to perform with a theatre group run by cartoonist Sridharan, called Rasika Ranga.

Her stage performances eventually brought her to the attention of filmmaker Mani Ratnam, who offered her a role in Roja. The 1992 film, starring Arvind Swamy and Madhoo, marked her screen debut, in which she played Madhoo's grandmother. Vatsala recalled that she was around 60 when she received her first film opportunity.

Despite entering cinema later in life, she went on to appear in more than 400 films. Her notable credits include Sathi Leelavathi, in which she played Ambujam Maami; Rhythm, Winner, Pattiyal, Dhaam Dhoom and Kalyana Samayal Saadham. She was frequently seen playing affectionate, sometimes humorous, grandmother figures.

Vatsala was also a familiar face on Tamil television. She appeared in popular serials such as Chithi, Anandham, Mundhanai Mudichu and Vasantham. She also worked with filmmaker Balu Mahendra on his television anthology Kadhai Neram. Vatsala Rajagopal's career spanned theatre, television and cinema, with her performances bringing her recognition across generations of Tamil audiences.
