The Rajinikanth starrer Jailer 2 has been on a dream run in theatres ever since its October 15 debut. On the eighth day of its release, director Nelson's film earned around 25 crore from theatres, according to data from the tracker Sacnilk. The day saw a drop in the Jailer 2 box office collection, from around 40 crore on Thursday to 25 crore. However, it has still taken the overall global box office collection to 606.05 crore. Reportedly, it is only the third Rajinikanth film to cross the 600 crore mark. On Thursday, the film’s producer Kalanithi Maran’s banner, Sun Pictures, revealed that it has become the highest-grossing Tamil film ever in terms of first week collection.
The Jailer sequel is well on its way to becoming the highest-grossing Tamil film of all time. Currently, that record belongs to Rajinikanth's own sci-fi hit 2.0 (2018), which reportedly grossed approximately 700 crore worldwide. Jailer 2 is widely expected to surpass 2.0 and set a new industry benchmark.
Will it become the first Tamil film to gross more than 1000 crore from theatres worldwide? This remains to be seen, although the film has a chance of achieving the remarkable feat because of the absence of big releases until Diwali, with Suriya's Scene being the main one for the festival season. Recently, Rajkumar Periasamy’s Om, starring Dhanush and Mammootty, dropped out of the Diwali race to avoid a clash with the Rajinikanth film. Besides, Sacnilk data shows the film earning over 5 crore in advance reservations even a week after its release.
In addition to Rajinikanth returning in the lead, the sequel features a massive ensemble cast, including the new cast additions Namo Narayana, SJ Suryah, Mithun Chakraborty, Vidya Balan, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Hrithik Roshan, and Vijay Sethupathi. Meanwhile, the returning cast includes Ramya Krishnan, Mirnaa, Yogi Babu, Jaffer Sadiq, Vinayakan and Mohanlal.
