Director Karthik Subbaraj's film Dorothy continues to garner positive appreciation from audiences and film fraternity members. Recently, Suriya and Vijay Antony praised the film, in addition to some of the big-name directors in Tamil cinema. On Saturday, Karthik Subbaraj dropped pictures featuring him with Mammootty. In the caption, the filmmaker wrote, "Thank you Mammootty sir for your time, your wishes, your encouraging words on Dorothy... Means a lot sir. You are always an inspiration sir."

Also present in one of the pictures alongside Karthik and Mammootty are the film's lead actors Sananth and Rishikanth.

For the uninitiated, Dorothy tells a story exploring themes of friendship, love, brotherhood, and identity. It follows lifelong friends Subbu (Sananth) and Karthi (Rishikanth). Their upbringing in harsh conditions in rural Tamil Nadu, including caste discrimination, violence, and patriarchy, shape their worldview. The arrival of a compassionate woman (Keerthy Suresh) in their lives makes the unforgiving life in the village a little less harsh for them, especially for Subbu. However, when of the two friends is forced to chase the other, things become complicated between the two.

Dorothy has earned much appreciation and some hatred for its treatment of an LGBTQ+ angle. Ever since its release, the amount of hatred against the film has forced celebrities to speak out in opposition of it.

Meanwhile, some are of the opinion that the film would have done better at the box office if it released in a different place where the audience is more welcoming of the LGBTQ+ community. Notably, there have been some comparisons between Karthik's film and Mammootty's 2023 film Kaathal: The Core, where the superstar plays a homosexual male. It has sparked more widespread discussion than the Malayalam film regarding gender identity, LGBTQ+ representation, and societal acceptance in cinema.
