Two weeks since the release of RJ Balaji and Suriya's Karuppu, the film recently earned Rs 130 crore in India alone at the box office. Suriya's 45th outing, the film has been performing well in theatres despite mixed reviews from critics.

For the unversed, the film features Suriya as Lord Karuppuswamy, descending on Earth in human form to change and sanitise the corrupt legal system. Suriya fans have been celebrating the film, calling it a successful comeback for the actor after a couple middling outings. However, critics have predominantly pointed out logical flaws in the narrative.

Meanwhile, a scene from Marmadesam's Vidaathu Karuppu is now being shared widely on social media, with many wondering if RJ Balaji was inspired by the scene to make the film. In episode 11 of Vidaathu Karuppu, directed by Naga, a scene features police officers returning jewellery to villagers, announcing that it will be returned to those who identify their jewels correctly without going through a court procedure.

Devadarshini's character, who is new to the town, is surprised by the police official's decision to make the process hasty, without making the people take the legal route. She even says that the people may not be able to see their jewels if they went to the courts because of a flawed justice system.

An elderly woman is then seen saying that the town is guarded by the fierce deity, Karuppusamy, who does not wait for justice to be delivered by the courts. This particular scene is being related to Suriya's Karuppu, which also starts with two characters being stolen from for their jewellery and running pillar to post at court attempting to retrieve it.

Indrans and Anagha Maya Ravi play a father-daughter duo whose jewellery gets robbed in Tamil Nadu when they come from Keralam. The police nab the thieves but send them to court to retrieve them legally. They are exploited by corrupt lawyers who extend the case for four months, following which Indrans prays to Karuppusamy, prompting his descent.

Previously, some also pointed out that the scene in Karuppu where RJ Balaji's Baby Kannan is unable to lie is inspired by Jim Carrey's Liar Liar. Just as Jim Carrey can only tell the truth in the film, RJ Balaji and his fellow lawyers in the court find themselves incapable of lying, thanks to Karuppusamy's doing in Karuppu.

Karuppu also stars RJ Balaji, Trisha, Sshivada, Swasika, Supreeth Reddy and Natty, among others. The film hit theatres on May 15, being delayed a day after its original release on May 14, due to financial hurdles.
