It is well known by now that Karuppu is replete with references and meta dialogues from popular films including some from director RJ Balaji's filmography itself. Opening up about the same, the film's editor Kalaivanan said he was excited seeing all the fan theories surrounding the action drama when the teaser and trailer were released, but pointed to a scene that carried a callback to then actor Vijay and director Venkat Prabhu's The Greatest of All Time (2024) that many had missed noticing.
Speaking to RedNool, Kalaivanan said, "The fan theories keep coming until the release. But very few had noticed one particular scene. At that point, not many had spoken about it but they are surfacing now. There's a GOAT reference in the metro scene where a man with a helmet would be seen standing."
He further explained that it was a small portion that was eventually moved to the deleted scenes section, as it was a small shot that didn't fit the final cut of the movie.
In Karuppu, Suriya stars as the titular guardian deity, who assumes the form of a lawyer after a devotee in distress, pleads for justice. The film has been having a successful run at the box office and has already crossed Rs 130 crore in Tamil Nadu alone. It had recently breached the record of becoming the highest-grossing film in Suriya's career.
The cast of the film also includes Trisha, Indrans, Swasika, Sshivada, Anagha Maya Ravi, Supreeth Reddy, Natty Natraj, among others. RJ Balaji, who has written as well as directed the film, portrays the antagonist, Baby Kannan.
Besides Kalaivanan as the editor, the rest of the technical team includes composer Sai Abhyankkar and cinematographer GK Vishnu.
