Director RJ Balaji's film Karuppu, starring Suriya and Balaji himself in important roles, released in theatres on May 15 after completing its censorship formalities. The film received a U/A rating from the Censor Board after the makers adhered to the minor cuts suggested by the certification authority. However, recently, it was revealed that the UK's censorship authority approved the release of an uncut version of the film for those aged 15 years and above. The raw version has been awaiting its release in the UK for the past few days.

On Monday, producer Dream Warrior Pictures announced that Karuppu's uncut version will release in the UK theatres on May 22, Friday.

The film tells the story of the titular deity (Suriya) who appears on Earth after heeding to the prayers of those suffering from injustice. It explores how Karuppasamy goes about enforcing his version of justice in a world spoiled by corruption.

Besides Suriya and Balaji, the film stars Indrans, Anagha Maya Ravi, Sshivada, Swasika, Natty, and Supreeth Reddy, among others. Despite earning mixed reviews, the film has been embraced by the audience. After four days of its release, it has earned around 143 crore from theatres worldwide, according to data from the tracker Sacnilk. The Karuppu box office collection in India dropped from around 28 crore on Sunday to about 14 crore on Monday. However, the Monday collection for the film in India came near to its Friday collection (15.50 crore), according to Sacnilk data. Reportedly, it has already become the highest-grossing film in Suriya's career. If the film maintains the momentum in the box office, it is likely to reach over 250 crore.
