After crossing the first weekend in theatres with flying colours, Suriya's latest film Karuppu, directed by RJ Balaji, has witnessed its first weekday slump. In its fourth day in theatres on Monday, the film has earned close to Rs 15 crore across India, a 49.6 per cent drop from the previous day's net collection of Rs 28.35 crore.
On its opening day, Karuppu earned Rs 15.50 crore, which increased to Rs 24.15 crore on day 2, thanks to positive word-of-mouth reviews. The film minted Rs 28.35 crore across 6,843 shows on Sunday, its third day in theatres, a 17.4 per cent growth from Saturday's net collection. Worldwide, the action drama has surpassed the Rs 150 crore mark and is continuing to attract audiences to theatres with its engaging storyline and performances by actors.
Karuppu stars Trisha as the female lead, reuniting with her Aaru (2005) co-star Suriya. The supporting cast includes Yogi Babu, Indrans, Sshivada, Swasika, Natty, Supreeth Reddy, and Anagha Maya Ravi. RJ Balaji also plays a key role in the film.
An excerpt from our CE's review of the film read, "RJ Balaji’s Karuppu is based on this simple premise and set within a dilapidated courtroom, which serves as a stand-in for the crumbling justice system. In fact, the courtroom is a character in itself in Karuppu, and straight out of Netflix’s Maamla Legal Hai universe. But Karuppu isn’t a slice-of-life drama or a rooted retelling of the issues plaguing our courts. It is an out-and-out entertainer with an important additional layer that makes it even more interesting: Divinity, or, in simpler terms… Balaji is back with a ‘Saami’ padam, and this time, everything is bigger than the last time he ventured down this path with Mookuthi Amman (2020)."
