After multiple delays, Suriya's Karuppu was scheduled to release in theatres on Thursday, May 14. However, the much-anticipated film has faced yet another setback as the action drama's 9 am shows have been cancelled. Issuing an apology, the film's producer SR Prabhu took to his X handle and wrote, "Due to unavoidable reasons 9am shows will be cancelled for Karuppu."

A day earlier, director RJ Balaji had hinted at the film facing issues at the eleventh hour, but expressed confidence on Karuppu's grand release. He said the producers were doing their best to resolve hurdles. "This film has always had hurdles, and somehow God has made us sail through all that and here we are after 32 months. This time as well, I have faith, complete faith in him," he added on his X handle.

The news had disappointed fans who had enthusiastically purchased tickets to catch the film on the big screen. Several users expressed their anger and sadness on the issue on their social media handles. It is unsure if the next show would release on time as the makers had not provided a clarity on the same.

Karuppu has Trisha reuniting with her Aaru (2005) co-star Suriya. The supporting cast includes Yogi Babu, acclaimed Malayalam actor Indrans, Sshivada, Lubber Pandhu fame Swasika, Natty, Supreeth Reddy, and Anagha Maya Ravi. The director is also playing a cameo role in the film.

The recently-released trailer opens with a father and daughter duo, played by Indrans and Anagha Maya Ravi, who face multiple delays in the hearing of their case, partly due to the scheming lawyer Baby Kannan (RJ Balaji in an antagonist avatar). After losing their hope, and leaving it up to the gods, their case is taken up by Saravanan (Suriya), who is teased as an incarnate of Karuppusamy. Aiding him is Preethi (Trisha), a lawyer who has faced Baby Kannan before.

Besides Sai Abhyankkar as the composer, Cinematographer GK Vishnu, editor R Kalaivanan, production designer Arun Venjaramoodu, and stunt choreographers Anbariv and Vikram Mor, round out the crew of Karuppu.
