Two days after actor-turned-politician Vijay took charge as the chief minister of Tamil Nadu, the speaker of the state's Assembly was appointed on Tuesday. JCD Prabhakar was appointed as the Assembly's speaker after he was elected unopposed.

As it is the assembly tradition, Leader of the House KA Sengottaiyan and Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin escorted the newly elected speaker to the chair. Chief minister Vijay then addressed the assembly, where he told a 'kutty story' in his style to explain how the tradition came to be in the first place.

He said that like many other traditions we've adopted from the British government, this also came from there. "Back then, the speaker was the bridge between the parliament and the monarch. When the King asked for something and the elected representatives denied it, the speaker was sent to convey the message. Often, in ire, the king would command for the speaker's life to be taken. Eventually ministers stopped volunteering to become the speaker of the house," he narrated, adding the punch, "So when someone was elected to become the speaker, he would be escorted by the leader of the opposition and the leader of the house to his chair to prevent him from running away."

TVK and opposition MLAs alike burst out in laughter upon the chief minister's narration of the story. Vijay was sworn in as the chief minister after his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, emerged as the single largest party in the recent Tamil Nadu State Assembly elections.

On the work front, the former actor's final film, Jana Nayagan, is still in limbo, awaiting a censor certificate. The film is expected to hit theatres soon.
