Dhanush and director Vignesh Raja’s Kara continued its steady theatrical run over the second weekend, registering gradual growth at the box office despite a noticeable reduction in show count.
According to trade tracker Sacnilk, the film earned Rs 1.33 crore in India on its second Sunday (Day 11), improving from Rs 1.18 crore on Saturday and Rs 0.96 crore on Friday. The latest figures indicate that the film has managed to maintain audience interest even after the completion of its first week in theatres.
The second weekend trend has come as a positive sign for the film, especially considering the drop in screens and shows after the first week. While Kara had over 3,300 shows during its first Thursday, the number fell to under 1,900 by the second weekend. Despite the reduced theatrical presence, occupancy witnessed a gradual rise, touching 20.6% on both Saturday and Sunday.
The film had wrapped up its first week with a net collection of Rs 30.26 crore in India. With the addition of the second weekend numbers, Kara’s total domestic net collection now stands at approximately Rs 33.73 crore, while the gross collection has crossed the Rs 38 crore mark.
Released amid decent expectations, Kara opened strongly with Rs 6.20 crore on Day 1 before seeing a slight jump on Friday with Rs 6.95 crore. However, the film experienced a significant weekday dip after the opening weekend, eventually stabilising in the Rs 1-2 crore range during the second week.
Set in Ramanathapuram in 1991 against the backdrop of the Gulf War oil crisis, the film follows Karasamy, played by Dhanush, who returns to violence in order to protect his people during a fuel shortage that disrupts life in the coastal region.
Apart from Dhanush, the film also stars Karunas, Mamitha Baiju, KS Ravikumar, MS Baskar, Jayaram and Suraj Venjaramoodu in key roles. The technical crew includes composer GV Prakash Kumar, cinematographer Theni Eswar and editor Sreejith Sarang.
