CM Vijay's farewell film Jana Nayagan is not showing any signs of slowing down as the H Vinoth-directed actioner has now surpassed the Rs 200 crore mark globally in just four days of release. On Sunday, its fourth day in theatres, Jana Nayagan collected a net of Rs 32 crore across 12,107 shows, taking the nett collections past the Rs 100 crore milestone to Rs 124.75 crore. The gross collections stand at Rs 145.98 crore.
Sunday's collection indicates a 10.7 per cent growth from Saturday where it earned Rs 28.50 crore net and Rs 33.34 crore gross in India. The film's overseas revenue continues to add significant portion to the box office collections, thanks to Vijay's fandom across the globe. On day 4, Jana Nayagan earned Rs 10 crore worldwide, taking global total to Rs 71.50 crore so far. Along with the worldwide numbers, the film's revenue is now at a staggering Rs 217.48 crore.
The sentiment surrounding Vijay's swansong is strong with fans heading to theatres to catch multiple shows of their favourite star. This is not just in the South Indian states, but also across India as cities like Mumbai, Delhi and Ahmedabad have registered an impressive occupancy of 34.8 per cent, 21.5 per cent and 18.3 per cent respectively.
However, reviews for the film have been mixed. In our CE review of the film, we had written, "In Jana Nayagan, politics is not discussed or debated. It is shouted through a megaphone, ending up less a conversation and more of a monologue. Vetri talks about every issue that stems from political apathy, but there is no place for nuanced discussion because Vijay didn’t have enough time. The film was supposed to be released before the Tamil Nadu elections, and the political digs against his opponents aren’t hidden. But, considering how politics is stranger than fiction, he is now the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, and certain potshots also end up as shooting his own journey in the foot."
The film boasts a star-studded ensemble featuring Mamitha Baiju, Pooja Hegde, and Bobby Deol, alongside Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, Narain and Priyamani. The film is backed by Venkat K Narayana of KVN Productions, in its foray into Tamil cinema.
A partial remake of 2023 National Award-winning Telugu film Bhagavanth Kesari, headlined by Nandamuri Balakrishna, it follows a former police officer who raises the daughter of a deceased friend and encourages her to overcome childhood trauma and pursue a career in the Indian Army. Jana Nayagan is first of his films to be released after he assumed office as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
