72nd National Film Awards for 2024: Amaran wins for Best Direction, Background Music, and Editing

Here is what 72nd National Film Awards Jury Chair, filmmaker Jayaraj said about GV Prakash, Rajkumar Periasamy and R Kalaivanan's respective work in Amaran

Director Rajkumar Periasamy's Amaran won in multiple categories of the 72nd National Film Awards for the year 2024, as announced earlier this Saturday. The film won Best Direction for Rajkumar Periasamy, Music Direction (Background Music) for GV Prakash Kumar, and Editing for R Kalaivanan.

Announcing Rajkumar Periasamy as the winner in the respective category, 72nd National Film Awards Jury chair, director Jayaraj said that the award has been given "for masterfully directing a deeply moving biographical war drama that balances intense action with profound human emotion." He added, "The film pays a heartfelt tribute to the courage, sacrifice and personal journey of a real-life soldier and his family."

As for Music Direction, the National Award jury chairperson stated that the recognition for GV Prakash is for "his deeply immersive background music in this patriotic biographical movie." He added that GV Prakash's work in the film "elevates the subtle, undercurrent agony and the story's key immersion, creating an unforgettable cinematic experience."

This is GV Prakash's third National Award; earlier, he won Best Music Direction: Background Score for Soorarai Pottru (2020) Best Music Direction: Songs for Vaathi.

Responding to the news, the composer shared a long note that is captioned, "An immense blessing for third time." In the note, he wrote, "I am deeply humbled and immensely grateful to receive the 72nd National Film Award for Best Music Director for the Movie Amaran. Winning this prestigious honour for the third time is truly a blessing, and I accept it with a heart full of gratitude. My sincere thanks to the esteemed jury and the selection committee for this incredible recognition."

GV Prakash also expressed his gratitude to Amaran producer Kamal Haasan for choosing him for the film's music and director Rajkumar for his "unwavering support throughout this remarkable journey."

Noting that he has been honoured to work with "an incredibly talented team" of actors and technicians, including Sivakarthikeyan and Sai Pallavi, the composer conveyed his "special thanks" to sound engineer Jehosavan. He dedicated the award to his family, friends, his "wonderful team of musicians and technicians" and everybody who has supported him in his cinema journey.

As for Editing, Jayaraj said that Kalaivanan has been awarded in the category "for the masterful crafting of pace, narrative flow, emotional depth and complex action sequences." He added, "The exceptional editing seamlessly enhances the film's storytelling and its overall cinematic impact."
