Many actors have said that the culture of going to cinema halls purely for stars is soon going to end, and that the market for films will become more democratic than ever before. However, actor-filmmaker Selvaraghavan differed to this point of view in a recent interview and said that the star factor is here to stay.
Speaking to Galatta Plus, he said that people will also come to watch films in theatres for stars such as Rajinikanth, Vijay, and Ajith Kumar. "When the superstar comes, it is different. Obviously, he has become the CM now," the actor-filmmaker said, referring to Vijay. He mentioned that the same applies to films led by Ajith or Rajinikanth. "With them, we are going to see a star only. Whatever we get beyond that is a bonus," he added. Pavish, who stars with Selvaraghavan in Love Oh Love, echoed this sentiment.
Pavish argued that a film is being released without a trailer only if there is a big star is part of it. "However, if I have to sell my film, I have to release a convincing trailer, a convincing song. And I have to promote the film in such a convincing way to get the audience in the theatre," Pavish added. At the same time, Pavish said that if a film has good content, the audience would celebrate it even if there are stars or no stars in it.
Meanwhile, Selvaraghavan argued that the star culture is not limited to Tamil cinema but rather is prevalent. "Even in Hollywood, they go watch films for stars as well," he said. It remains to be seen how those in Hollywood will view this. Either way, actors have been playing a big part in the box office performances of films.
