Ajith Kumar's Mankatha opened to massive celebrations and fanfare in theatres upon its re-release after 15 years, with audiences throwing confetti, bursting crackers and screaming for their favourite star. Even before it hit theatres, the action thriller, directed by Venkat Prabhu received tremendous response on booking sites and tickets have been sold out till the next week. Overwhelmed by the love, the film's cast and crew have been expressing their happiness on its theatrical reception. Joining them is composer Yuvan Shankar Raja, who mentioned that he was "honoured" to be a part of Ajith Kumar's 50th film.
"The craze for a re-release after 15 years of its original release is just (fire emojis). Love you guys. Honoured to be a part of AK50. Mankatha," he wrote, sharing his happiness.
Mankatha brought Ajith back in a grey-shaded role after 2007's Billa and is one of the highest-earning films in his career. It is also among the biggest hits in Venkat Prabhu's career and continues to remains one of the most memorable and celebrated films in Ajith's career. Besides winning appreciation for its story and engaging screenplay, the film was also received well for its music by Yuvan, with all the songs continuing to remain popular among audiences even a decade after its release.
Apart from Ajith, Mankatha also stars Arjun Sarja, Trisha, Lakshmi Rai, Anjali, Andrea Jeremiah, Ashwin Kakumanu, Vaibhav Reddy, Premji Amaren, Mahat Raghavendra, Jayaprakash, Aravind Akash and Subbu Panchu in prominent roles.
The film follows a police officer who is on suspension and who joins a group of robbers to help them steal Rs 500 crore emerging from cricket betting. However, when the time comes to divide the amount, some of them betray the rest, setting the stage for an entertaining film.
