After a week of speculations about whether or not Sivakarthikeyan's Parasakthi will clear censorship formalities and release on the previously announced date, the film's makers announced on Friday that it has received a U/A certificate. It is thereby on track to hit theatres on January 10, Saturday.
The film was still under consideration by the Central Board for Film Certification until Thursday. As per reports, the Censor Board suggested multiple cuts to the film, including scenes portraying protests against Hindi imposition.
Reportedly, the board suggested tweaks to the scenes or their complete removal, and the film's director, Sudha Kongara, approached its revising committee, raising objections against the suggestion thereof. Reports claim that the filmmaker told the committee that the cuts would have a major negative effect on the film's story, making it weaker in terms of its historical relevance.
Speaking about receiving the censor certificate, the film's creative produce Dev Ramnath said, "We are on track to start shows tomorrow. We are also working to ensure that the film reaches all theatres across Tamil Nadu and across cities so that fans can catch the film as planned."
While this has been happening on the one side, another Pongal release, Vijay's Jana Nayagan, was postponed after a similar censor issue. On Friday, Madras High Court Justice PT Asha directed the CBFC to provide the U/A certificate by the censor board, which has appealed to the High Court Chief Justice, the hearing for which is scheduled for 2:15 pm on Friday.
Parasakthi also stars Sreeleela in her Tamil debut, Ravi Mohan as the antagonist and Atharvaa. The film's extended cast includes Kulappulli Leela, Prakash Belawadi, Dev Ramnath, Prithvi Rajan, Guru Somasundaram and Chetan, with cameo appearances from Rana Daggubati and Basil Joseph.
Sudha has written the film along with Arjun Nadesan, with an additional screenplay by Ganeshaa and dialogues by Madhan Karky and Shan Karuppusamy. The crew of the film includes GV Prakash as the music composer, Ravi K Chandran as the cinematographer and Sathish Surya as the editor. Aakash Baskaran is producing the film under his Dawn Pictures banner.
Dev Ramnath is serving as the creative producer, along with MP Senthel and Rhea Kongara, who are serving as executive producers. Red Giant Movies is distributing the film.
