Jana Nayagan to skip initial release date

While the film was expected to hit theatres on Friday, uncertainty over its release started growing after it failed to procure a censorship certificate, even until Tuesday

Jana Nayagan, Vijay’s final outing as a film star before his foray into politics, seems to have hit rough seas just days before its highly anticipated release. While the film was expected to hit theatres on Friday, uncertainty over its release started growing after it failed to procure a censorship certificate, even until Tuesday. Following this, producer Venkat K Narayana of KVN Productions moved to the Madras High Court. After hearing arguments from both the makers of the film and CBFC, Justice PT Asha announced that a judgment on the case will be passed on Friday.

On Wednesday, reports started flooding in about overseas distributors, including those in Europe and the USA, pulling down shows. Malik Streams Corporation, the Malaysian distributor of the film, officially confirmed on Wednesday that Jana Nayagan will not release on Friday, as initially planned. “Due to unforeseen circumstances, the initial release of Jana Nayagan, scheduled for 9 January 2026, has been postponed to a later date. We are currently awaiting further updates from the production team,” reads the social media post.

Meanwhile, a source close to the film’s production house has revealed details regarding their next course of action. “While we are yet to confirm a new release date, we have decided to refund the tickets that have been sold until now, which also includes overseas sales; the USA has recorded the highest number of advanced bookings.”

The source further added, “Even though Jana Nayagan has cleared censorship formalities in some foreign countries, we have decided to wait until we can release the film in India. We are aiming for a simultaneous worldwide theatrical release.”
