Actor Varalaxmi Sarathkumar is known for her many powerful characters in films, such as Sandakozhi 2, Maari 2, and Danny, to name some. However, do you know that she had second thoughts about the kind of roles she was choosing early on in her career? In a recent interview with Rayane Mithun, Varalaxmi said that by the time she starred in the blockbuster Kannada film Maanikya, alongside Kiccha Sudeep, she felt a lack of excitement for her choices. "By the third film, I did not want to do certain films if the roles were not going to going to excite me," the actor said. The actor also shared that after Maanikya, she thought about quitting cinema if an immediate offer to star in a Mani Ratnam film or a Bala directorial did not come her way. "In the next two months, I got a call from Bala sir; that is how Tharai Thappattai happened. After that only, my journey (started). That was like my second life. As an actor, I felt like I arrived with Tharai Thappattai."

Varalaxmi Sarathkumar said that her role in the 2016 film felt beyond her "comfort zone" and showcased her "true talent". The actor added that she did not want typical heroine roles in commercial cinema and instead wished to pursue powerful characters after Maanikya. "That film itself, I realised that I did not want to do these romantic roles. I do not mind doing a romantic role, but it has to have a little more meat."

Varalaxmi also claimed that she is among the first few actors to change the mindset among young actresses of wanting to do pursue only lead heroine roles. "I think I am the first one to change that stereotype," she said before batting for actors to have more faith in their choices.
