Actor Varalaxmi Sarathkumar called out a review of her latest film Phoenix for omitting her name despite her character's importance to the plot. The action film, which hit screens last Friday, marks the debut of Vijay Sethupathi's son, Surya Sethupathi, in a lead role and the directorial debut of renowned stunt choreographer Anl Arasu.
The review from a film buff on X, which praises Phoenix as a realistic revenge film with violence, recommends the film for fans of the genre. It highlights Surya Sethupathi's "promising debut" and Devadarshini's performance as his onscreen mother. It further commends the film's runtime, action, and climax. Notably, the review makes no mention of Varalaxmi, who features prominently in the film's promotional materials and plays a role integral to the story.
Varalaxmi did not mince words in her response to the reviewer. She tweeted, "Hey thank you just in case your forgot my name I’m Varalaxmi Sarathkumar.. I know I’m not your top 3 favorites but you can tag me and perhaps act and show me how to not be a caricature.. because to be that also you need to act so thanks..very sweet of you.!!" Her strong words clearly indicated her displeasure at the omission of her name in the review. In addition to the omission, what seems to have provoked the reaction is the fact that a Phoenix poster featuring Surya and Varalaxmi's characters accompanied the review.
Notably, CE's review of Phoenix by Rohini M mentions Varalaxmi Sarathkumar as part of the actors "who deliver intense performances".
Produced by Rajalakshmy Arasakumar under AK Braveman Pictures, Phoenix also features a significant ensemble cast including Vignesh, Abi Nakshatra, Varsha Viswanath, Sathya NJ, Harish Uthaman, Sampath, Dileepan, Poovaiyar, and Rishi. Sam CS composed music for the film, Praveen KL handled the editing, and Velraj served as the cinematographer.
