Prime Video never made any prior announcement about the film's release on the streaming platform

Some days ago, multiple reports said that director Prabu Solomon's film Kumki 2 would be available for streaming on Prime Video from January 03, Saturday, onwards. However, it has come to the streaming platform a day before the reported OTT release date. Interestingly, Prime Video never made any prior announcement about the film's release on the streaming platform.

The film hit theatres in November last year and opened to mostly negative reviews from critics, with some calling it the worst Tamil film of 2025. It did not perform as well as expected at the box office either, grossing 1.66 crore from around two weeks from theatres worldwide, according to data from Sacnilk.

Set in the 1980s, Kumki 2 explores the brotherly relationship between a youngster, named Bhoomi, played by Mathi, and an elephant named Nila. The story starts from their childhood, where they stay inseparable, and goes up to their grown-up days, where they part ways due to certain circumstances. The film also stars Shrrita Rao and Arjun Das, among others.

Recently, Vikram Prabhu, who made his acting debut with the 2012 original, questioned the relevance of the sequel. Vikram admitted that he knew about the makers' plan to do a sequel to the 2012 film but questioned how it would work because the story has been completed with the original. "One Kumki was enough," the actor said at the time about the Prabhu Solomon directorial.
