At the trailer launch event of Karthi's upcoming film, Sardar 2, the actor was announced to be joining hands with director Mohan Raja. The director is known for making films like Jayam (2003) and Thani Oruvan (2015).

Speaking at the event, Mohan Raja said that the upcoming film will be a cross of M Kumaran Son of Mahalakshmi (2004) and Velaikkaran (2017). The former was a sports drama which followed the rise of an underdog, who lost his mother. The latter was drama thriller which centered on a man's fight against a company, which pushes toxic food.

Velaikkaran (2017) was also the last Tamil release of Mohan Raja, who is set to reunite with his brother, actor Ravi Mohan, for Thani Oruvan 2. The director's last release was Godfather (2022), which was the Telugu remake of Mohanlal's Lucifer (2019).

Meanwhile, Karthi's upcoming film is the sequel to Sardar (2022). The cast also includes SJ Suryah, Malavika Mohanan, Ashika Ranganath, Yogi Babu, Achyuth Kumar, Balaji Sakthivel, and Rajisha Vijayan, among others.
