On Wednesday, filmmaker Atlee shared a long note on his experience catching Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey in IMAX theatres. The review comes more than a month after the film's release worldwide on July 17.
Sharing a graphic with his review, Atlee wrote, "THE ODYSSEY—AN EXPERIENCE BEYOND CINEMA. There are films you watch. There are films you admire. And then, very rarely, there are films that completely take you somewhere else. THE ODYSSEY did that to me."
Sharing what impressed him on the narrative and technical front, he continued, "Nolan's Sir's narrative is astonishing. The imagery speaks its own language, the camera feels like another character telling the story, and Ludwig's music doesn't just accompany the film - it enters your pulse."
He then detailed his theatrical experience, describing it as "immersive". "There is an adrenaline and an immersive force to the experience that I have rarely felt inside a theatre. But what stayed with me most was something very personal - while the audience in you completely surrenders to it, that is a true EPIC. That's exactly what THE ODYSSEY was for me," he explained.
Lastly, he had one advice for audiences who are yet to catch the film. "Experience it in IMAX. Let the film surround you. Let the film take over. Let it take you somewhere else. Some cinema is meant to be watched. Some cinema is meant to be lived," he concluded.
The Odyssey is based on Greek king Odysseus' (Matt Damon) long and ardous 10-year-long journey after the Trojan war to reunite with his wife Penelope (Anne Hathaway) and son Telemachus (Tom Holland).
The star-studded cast also features Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, John Leguizamo, Elliot Page, Himesh Patel, Bill Irwin, Samantha Morton, Jesse Garcia, Will Yun Lee, Rafi Gavron, Shiloh Fernandez, Mia Goth, among others.
Up next, Atlee is working on his much-anticipated film with Allu Arjun and Deepika Padukone, titled Raaka. The makers also shared an intense first-look poster of the actor with kohl-rimmed eyes and a clawed, almost beast-like hand, suggesting that he could have a half-human, half-animal look in the film. The film also stars Femina George in a prominent role.
