After years of uncertainty, Sathuranga Vettai 2 could finally be headed to theatres, with a recent intervention reportedly clearing a major hurdle for the long-delayed sequel.

The film, which stars Arvind Swamy and Trisha in the lead, has remained unreleased despite completing production several years ago. Directed by NV Nirmal Kumar, the sequel is based on a story by filmmaker H Vinoth, who directed the 2014 original Sathuranga Vettai. The cast also includes the late Daniel Balaji, Nassar, Radharavi, Dheeraj Rathnam, Sriman, PV Chandramoulli and Kambam Shankar.

The latest development came after theatre owner and distributor Tiruppur Subramaniam reportedly took up the matter with financier Madurai Anbuchezhiyan in an effort to find a way to bring the film to the big screen. Speaking to Chitra Lakshmanan, Subramaniam discussed his attempts to facilitate the film's release.

According to the reports, Anbuchezhiyan agreed to let the film release without demanding an immediate payment. He is said to have told Subramaniam, “I do not want any money now. Let the film release first, and my share can be settled later from the revenue.” The reported decision could prove crucial in giving the long-pending project a fresh start.

The development is also significant given producer-actor Manobala's association with the film. Manobala, who passed away in 2023, had reportedly been keen on ensuring that Sathuranga Vettai 2 reached audiences and had worked towards resolving the obstacles surrounding its release. With the film now potentially moving closer to theatres, its release could also serve as a tribute to the late filmmaker's persistence.

The sequel carries forward the con-artist-driven world associated with the Sathuranga Vettai franchise, which gained a cult following for its take on scams and deception. While the original featured Natarajan Subramaniam in the lead, the sequel shifts focus to Arvind Swamy and Trisha.

If the latest developments materialise into a release, the long-awaited sequel could finally get its chance with audiences. The film, which was shot between 2016 and 2017, will be seeing the light of day a decade after completing production.
