A few days after it was reported that the entirety of Vijay's Jana Nayagan was leaked, a cable operator was arrested on charges of broadcasting the pirated version of the film, in Coimbatore.

After reports emerged that the film was being broadcast on the Rasi Prime Movie's channel, a functionary of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), Mohanapriya, lodged a complaint after which the Coimbatore police searched for the suspect, S Palanisamy of Karumathampatti.

Jana Nayagan was announced to open in theatres on January 9, but was subsequently postponed, after the banner backing the film, KVN Productions filed an appeal against the Central Board of Film Certification's decision to re-evaluate the film through a reexamining committee.

Written and directed by H Vinoth, Jana Nayagan is Vijay's last film before he retires from films for politics. The film also stars Pooja Hegde, Mamitha Baiju, and Bobby Deol, among others.
