Mohanlal played a brief cameo in 2023's Jailer, directed by Nelson and starring Rajinikanth in the lead role. There has been strong buzz within the industry that the actor is reprising his role in the upcoming sequel to the 2023 film. The buzz hit a fever pitch as the actor's personal stylist Jishad Shamsudeen took to his Instagram Stories space and posted, "And it's a wrap for M," mentioning Jailer 2 with a hashtag.
Although ANI recently reported that principal photography on it has been wrapped, according to reports, the film is still in the last phase of production. Reportedly, the film's producer, Sun Pictures' Kalanithi Maran, is expected to announce its release date on April 14, coinciding with Tamil New Year.
As reported earlier, Jailer 2 also brings back original cast members Ramya Krishnan, Mirnaa, Yogi Babu, Vinayakan, and Shivarajkumar. Actors Jatin Sarna and Suraj Venjaramoodu have also joined the franchise as its new cast additions.
Unconfirmed reports suggest that Shah Rukh Khan also stars in the film as a police officer.
Mohanlal played Matthew, a crime lord with significant connection and power, in the 2023 original. He helps Rajinikanth's Muthuvel Pandian with his resources and muscle power towards the end of the film. While the role was brief, it made an impact for the 'Entha Mone?' punchline—a catchphrase that is often associated with the actor's off-screen image—and his charisma and screen presence.
Mohanlal's upcoming films include Drishyam 3, the Jeethu Joseph directorial where he is reprising his role as Georgekutty, and Patriot, director Mahesh Narayanan's film that also stars Mammootty, Fahadh Faasil, Kunchacko Boban, Revathy, and Nayanthara, among others.
On the other hand, Rajinikanth's upcoming films include two projects with Kamal Haasan—one directed by Nelson himself that brings both stars onscreen after a long time and another that Kamal will produce and Don fame Cibi Chakaravarthi will direct.
