Recently, we reported about Aditya Dhar's Dhurandhar: The Revenge, starring Ranveer Singh, overtaking the collection of Baahubali 2: The Conclusion at the North America box office. Actor Rana Daggubati, who is known for playing Bhallaladeva in the Baahubali franchise, reacted to the news about the Hindi film grossing more than his movie.
Speaking to Variety, Rana said that the aforementioned news bodes well for Indian cinema in terms of its growth in international markets. "It's good. It's a decade later, but it's still very good. I think we’re all still touching the tip of the iceberg," the actor-filmmaker said.
Rana Daggubati also suggested that the Dhurandhar sequel's massive success further reinforces the fact that audiences worldwide resonate with Indian cinema more than ever before.
"There’s been all kinds of cinema that's going to see a little beauty. I'll talk about this Malayalam film about nurses who are working in Bombay. Now it's a story that did reasonably well in India but phenomenally globally," he said, referring to All We Imagine As Light, the Payal Kapadia directorial that he backed through his Spirit Media banner.
According to Rana, it is the relatability factor of these films' stories that ensures their worldwide appeal rather than their production scales. "You'll have Baahubalis, you'll have Dhurandhars, you'll have all of these cinemas, but the cinema that's personal will be able to resonate far across."
The actor also urged filmmakers in India to "find the best cinematic language" to ensure similar success for films rooted in India's culture and history.
As an actor, Rana was most recently seen in Sudha Kongara's Parasakthi, co-starring Sivakarthikeyan and Ravi Mohan, among others. As a producer, meanwhile, his latest film Neelira, which he backs through Spirit Media alongside Stone Bench's Karthik Subbaraj, is now out in theatres.
