Ravi Mohan's 2015 action film Thani Oruvan, directed by Mohan Raja, was a major turning point in the actor's career. The critically and commercially acclaimed film was a talking point for months owing to a gripping storyline and strong performances from Ravi Mohan, Arvind Swamy, Nayanthara and other actors. Eight years later, a sequel for the film was announced amid much anticipation and hype. However, after a promo video was released in 2023, no further updates have been made about the film till date.
Addressing the delay, Mohan Raja recently revealed that he met producer Archana Kalpathi of AGS Entertainment to discuss the film. “We haven’t finalized the budget yet, but after hearing the story, she mentioned that it isn’t the right time to proceed. I asked if the film requires significant work and investment, and she replied, ‘No sir, it’s not about that. You haven’t narrated a simple story, and the timing isn’t right. This project will happen, but the industry’s potential needs to grow further.’ We are staying in touch,” he said.
Mohan Raja also added that while he is unsure if the film will be made as soon as he expects, he confirmed that a sequel will definitely be made.
Announced in August 2023, Thani Oruvan 2 will see the return of Mithran IPS and an even more formidable villain whose identity is yet to be disclosed. AGS Entertainment, which backed the 2015 film, will also be producing the sequel. While it was announced that Nayanthara and a few other cast members will return for the sequel, official announcement is yet to confirm the same.
Thani Oruvan revolved around a cop (played by Jayam Ravi), who is on a mission to nab scientist Siddharth Abhimanyu (Arvind Swamy) who runs a medical mafia. Thambi Ramaiah, Ganesh Venkataraman, Harish Uthaman, Sricharan, Rahul Madhav, Nagineedu, Madhusudhan Rao, Saiju Kurup, Nassar and Mugdha Godse played supporting roles.
The cinematography and editing were handled by Ramji and Gopi Krishna respectively. The music was composed by Hiphop Tamizha, which was received well among audiences.da
