Actor and racecar driver Ajith Kumar spoke about the importance of promoting motorsports in India. The actor is currently participating in races across the world, as part of the AK Racing Team.
In a recent interview to Chanakyaa, he said, "I am not telling them to follow me when I am racing. I am saying follow motorsports, follow the other Indian drivers."
He added, "It's a very expensive sport, and people are going out of their way to get sponsorships, or race even without sponsors coming forward. I hope this sport gets popular and sponsors come forward to support drivers participating on behalf of India."
Speaking about government funding for the sport, Ajith said, "It is not right for us to expect funding from governments. The Governments, be it State or Central, have got a lot more issues to sort out. But what the governments can do is to direct corporates, like how corporates are supporting other sports like cricket." He explained that the goverment can encourage corporates to support sports with lesser viewership.
Speaking about the future of motorsports racing, Ajith Kumar said, "But I believe motorsports has a lot of potential. It's not just for the drivers, it's for the automobile manufacturers. India is now a hub for the automobile industry, with a lot of brands coming to India. So there is a lot of scope for sponsors and brands for their visibility."
He also said, "Everybody commutes, everybody has their own motorcycles, cars, so they can relate to motorsports. But I don't want them racing on the roads, I don't want that to be misinterpreted. There are ways to do this and there are people to guide youngsters who want to take up motorsports. Please promote motorsports, promote all the young drivers who are representing the country. But not me, don't promote me."
