Actor Bindu Ghosh, known for playing several comedy roles in popular Tamil films including Komberi Mookan, Mangamma Sabatham and Dowry Kalyanam has passed away at the age of 76.

According to reports, the actor's health had been deteriorating for the past few years. Her family members confirmed that the actor's mortal remains have been kept at her residence in Virugambakkam, Chennai for people to pay their last respects. Her final rites are scheduled to take place on Monday.

Condolences have been shared by several celebrities on social media. A dancer as well as an actor, Bindu began her career in the industry with Kalathur Kannamma (1960), which also marked Kamal Haasan's debut. She worked alongside several noted female comedians including Manorama and Kovai Sarala, apart from significant contributions as a choreographer for many films.

She established herself in both the fields and one of her notable contributions included choreographing iconic dance sequences for Tamil Nadu’s former Chief Ministers, MG Ramachandran and J Jayalalithaa. She made her formal acting debut with the 1982 film Kozhi Koovuthu, directed by Gangai Amaran. The film also marked the filmmaker's directing debut.

Following Kozhi Koovuthu, the actor also gave memorable performances in Komberi Mookan, Mangamma Sabatham, Dowry Kalyanam, Uruvangal Maaralam, Thoongathey Thambi Thoongathey and Needhiyin Nizhal, among others. During the height of her career, the actor starred alongside Kamal Haasan, Rajinikanth, Sivaji Ganesan, and Vijayakanth.

In recent years, the actor has been battling persistent health issues. Last year, she opened up to the media about her worsening financial situation and the difficulty of affording basic necessities like food and medication. Following her interview, actors Bala, Richard, and Ramalingam stepped forward to offer financial assistance.
