C Premkumar: Quality of Hindi cinema is not depreciating

Of late, there has been plenty of discourse around the deteriorating quality of content in Hindi cinema. Many celebrities disputed the notion, and '96 and Meiyazhagan filmmaker C Premkumar is the latest to do so. Premkumar cited Imtiaz Ali's 2024 film Amar Singh Chamkila, starring Diljit Dosanjh in the titular role, as an example of why Hindi cinema still produces quality films. He called it "one of the best movies I have seen." The filmmaker also said, "Dangal has always been a big inspiration. Whenever I am going to make a movie, I watch it." However, adding an element of nuance to the discourse, Premkumar said that the lack of rooted films is what the film industry lacks. "We used to get a constant supply of those films in the 1990s and early 2000s, but now we do not," he said.

Premkumar was speaking at a conference organised by The Indian Screenwriters Association earlier this year, the video of which was uploaded the other day.

Recently, Aamir Khan also dismissed the notion about the quality of films in Hindi during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India. The actor said that it is as good as other Indian industries, while admitting that there is much room for improvement for the industry. The criticism of Hindi cinema has been around for decades, dating back to the post-silent era. However, it has become more intense than ever before partly due to the emergence of quality regional films and the better accessibility to those titles on streaming platforms. Aamir's erstwhile wife, director Kiran Rao also dismissed the notion in a recent conversation organised by The New Indian Express.
