Speculation is still rife about whether Vijay's final film, Jana Nayagan, is a remake of director Anil Ravipudi's National Award winning film Bhagavanth Kesari, starring Nandamuri Balakrishna in the lead role. At the recent Jana Nayagan audio launch, the film's director H Vinoth seemingly took a dig at those claiming that the film is a Bhagavanth Kesari remake. Vinoth played down the speculation and stated that it is, after all, a film starring Vijay. Recently, Bhagavanth Kesari director Anil Ravipudi echoed Vinoth's sentiment. The filmmaker said that he does not know anything about the remake. Calling Vijay "a gentleman," Anil said that he, too, would need to wait until the release of the Tamil film to know whether it has anything to do with his National Award winning film. "Until then, let us treat Jana Nayagan as a Vijay film," Anil said.

If anything, Anil's statement has only added fuel to the existing speculation. Netizens argue that if it the speculation is not true, director Anil would have outright denied any connection between his film and the Vijay starrer, and that since he has left it open to interpretations after the release, the film might just be a remake.

Earlier, Bhagavanth Kesari star Sreeleela also said that she does not know whether her film is a remake of the H Vinoth directorial. Sreeleela also expressed her excitement for the film's release, alongside her Tamil debut Parasakthi.

What we know for sure is that the film brings together a star-studded ensemble cast. Apart from Vijay, it stars Pooja Hegde, Mamitha Baiju, Bobby Deol, Priyamani, Narain, and Prakash Raj, among others. The film is slated for a January 09 release in theatres, a day before Sivakarthikeyan-Sudha Kongara's Parasakthi.
