Rajinikanth's iconic 1999 film Padayappa is making waves at the box office even after its re-release 25 years later. The KS Ravikumar-directed action drama has minted over Rs 12 crore globally during the opening weekend at the box office.
It is to be noted that the film was Tamil cinema's highest-grossing film when it was originally released in 1999. Its re-release had a promising start with approximately Rs 4 crore gross worldwide on its opening day, according to Sacnilk, which gradually picked up, overthrowing trends to breach the Rs 10 crore mark. Thanks to strong nostalgic value associated with the original, the fan-favourite entertainer remained houseful on weekends with drastic increase in footfall.
Padayappa, directed by KS Ravikumar, also starred Sivaji Ganesan, Soundarya, Radha Ravi, Nassar, Manivannan, and Abbas. Produced by Rajinikanth's Arunachala Cine Creations, the film still remains a favourite among Tamil fans for its strong storyline and screenplay, and also for AR Rahman's soundtrack and songs.
Days ago, Rajinikanth, in a video address about his experience filming for Padayappa, shared that he is planning to make a sequel to the film from the point of view of Neelambari, who vows to avenge the 'injustice' caused to her.
