Despite mixed reviews, Lokesh Kanagaraj's Coolie, starring Rajinikanth is a 'Powerhouse' at the box office.

Sun Pictures, the production company of Coolie, officially unveiled on its social media handle, alongside the film’s day 1 teaser, that the film has earned over Rs 151 crore at the worldwide box office on its opening day.

With this announcement, Coolie tops the list of top day 1 grossers in the Tamil film industry, surpassing Vijay's Leo. Interestingly, both films were directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj. Released in 2023, Leo grossed over Rs 145 crore on its opening day worldwide.

Rajinikanth stars in his first collaboration with Lokesh Kanagaraj and reunites with Sathyaraj after 35 years. The cast includes Nagarjuna, Upendra, Shruti Haasan, Soubin Shahir, and features cameos by Aamir Khan and Pooja Hegde.

Coolie opened to mixed to negative reviews. While critics and audiences praised the performances, they criticised the writing.

An excerpt from the CE review of the film reads, "This is the biggest drawback of Coolie. There are so many characters, and yet, the writing doesn't allow any of them to flourish except for Soubin’s Dayalan and Shruti’s Preethi. Surprisingly, even Deva gets a raw deal as his start-stop arc is as random as the machinations of Simon and the machine of Rajasekhar. In fact, the point that connects Simon’s gang and Rajasekhar’s family starts with promise but tapers off soon enough because the idea isn't fleshed out enough."
