With just a day left for Coolie’s release, the film’s co-writer Chandhru Anbazhagan has shared more inside details about a much-anticipated highlight of the movie, Rajinikanth’s powerful monologue.
Speaking to Cineulagam, Chandhru revealed that the sequence spans over seven pages of dialogue and was given to Rajinikanth only on the afternoon before the shoot. “We told Rajini sir about the monologue just two days earlier, and even then, we had to change the lines again. He got the final version only a few hours before filming. He read it, absorbed it, and performed it the same night,” he said.
Drawing a comparison to the actor’s famous one-minute monologue in Annamalai, Chandhru explained that this new piece runs nearly three minutes and was shot in a single take. “He could have asked for multiple takes or trimmed it down, but instead he delivered it in one go. Within those three minutes, he portrayed an incredible range of emotions. When Lokesh said ‘cut’, the entire crew broke into spontaneous applause. None of us expected to be so blown away.”
Chandhru also hinted that the sequence may answer many questions that arise while watching the film, provided audiences pay close attention. And while he stopped short of revealing whether Coolie is a standalone film or part of the Lokesh Cinematic Universe, he teased, “Once the audience sees it, they’ll know.”
Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, Coolie features Rajinikanth alongside Sathyaraj, Shruti Haasan, Nagarjuna, Upendra, Soubin Shahir, and Aamir Khan. The film has been certified A and also boasts high-energy action sequences choreographed by Anbariv, cinematography by Girish Gangadharan, editing by Philomin Raj, and music by Anirudh.
