At the Retta Thala teaser launch earlier today, the film's director Kris Thirukumaran revealed that he did not get an opportunity to direct a film for a long time. "After doing Maan Karate (2014) and Gethu (2016), I did not get any offers for eight-nine years. That is the truth," he said. He added, "I got an opportunity to meet Arun Vijay sir after that. I told him 'I have a good story and want to tell it you.'" He accepted my offer immediately after he listened to the story."
In a candid admission, the filmmaker disclosed that he worked on the Vijay starrer Sarkar (2018) as a "co-director" in the meantime. The filmmaker added that Arun Vijay backed his directorial vision to the hilt and that the actor committed himself fully to the film's action sequences, despite having multiple fractures.
Later, he went on to reveal that Retta Thala tells a story with man's animalistic instincts as its core theme. "That is why we designed the first poster, which shows one man trying to eat another, by taking inspiration from a painting. Every human being has a grade shade. The film explores a situation explaining what will happen when the grade shades in everyone project themselves. That is the interesting factor in the film," said Kris.
Retta Thala stars Arun Vijay in a dual role. He has portrayed two roles in the same film in 2019's Thadam. The cast also includes Siddhi Idnani, Yogi Samy, Tanya Ravichandran, John Vijay, Balaji Murugadoss, and Hareesh Peradi.
The film is produced by Bobby Balachandran under the BTG Universal banner. It has music by Sam CS, cinematography by Tijo Tomy, and editing by Anthony. The film is yet to have a release date.
