Tamil cinema lyricist and Me-Too accused Vairamuthu, in a press meet sought the setting up of panels similar to the Hema Committee to ensure the safety of women. His statement drew severe backlash on social media.

In his press briefing, he said not just in films, every industry in every state should constitute panels like the Hema Committee to prevent 'exploitation of women'. "Men should discard their masculinity, and women should discard their femininity in order to achieve complete equality between both genders," he added.

He further said Hema Committee is the first step in attaining complete freedom of women in every industry they work in.

His press meet received backlash from celebrities who called it 'ironical' for someone to voice for the safety of women when he himself has been accused by multiple women of sexual harassment.

This comes days after singer Suchitra, who has been 'exposing' celebrities in her recent interviews, revealed that Vairamuthu invited her to his house for "a gift," and when he saw her mother accompanying her, he allegedly said, "I was expecting you to come alone." Suchitra added that to escape from the embarrassing situation, Vairamuthu gifted her a shampoo bottle.
